Maintaining quality, maximizing throughput and minimizing energy consumption in fluidized bed paddy drying.

To optimize drying in a fluidized bed drier, a mathematical model was developed based on previously collected data. Trials were conducted to validate the model. Results of drying trials showed that the drying rate in paddy kernels was controlled by diffusion. However, drying capacity increased with specific air flow rates and drying air temp. By recycling drying air, energy consumption was reduced. Increasing the amount of recycled air or lowering the air flow rate in the fluidized bed drier reduced energy consumption. No adverse effects on grain quality were obtained when paddy was dried at 115 deg C to a final m.c. of 24-25% d.b. The optimum operating conditions based on mathematical simulation were: 90% recycling of air, 4.4 m/s air velocity, 9.5 cm bed thickness and a specific air flow rate of 0.1 kg/s per kg DM. The total drying cost was about 0.08 US$/kg water evaporated.
