Postharvest quality and water relations of bouvardia cut flowers as affected by preharvest temperature and season.

The vase life of bouvardia cut flowers is limited by leaf wilting rather than flower senescence. Studies were carried out to determine the effects of greenhouse temperature and season on the vase life of cultivars Bridesmaid, Roxanne and van Zijverden. Plants were grown in greenhouses at 15, 18, 22 or 25 deg C during autumn/winter and winter/spring. Stems were cut when 2-5 flowers were open and flowers received a transport simulation of 20 h at 15 deg packed in boxes before being evaluated for vase life. In the autumn, vase life decreased with decreasing greenhouse temperature from 18 days at 25 deg to 9 days at 15 deg . In spring, a temperature of 18 deg was optimal. Roxanne was more sensitive to wilting than the other cultivars. Transport simulation of one day increased sensitivity to wilting. Bouvardias grown at higher temperatures maintained their initial weight better.
