Rambutan and pili nuts: potential crops for Hawaii.

The origin, morphology, culture, postharvest diseases, insect pests, wild relatives and prospects for commercial production of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), an evergreen tropical tree related to the lychee (Litchi chinensis), and the origin, morphology, culture and prospects for commercial production of pili (Canarium ovatum), a tropical tree native to the Philippines, are discussed. With the decline of the sugar industry and the diversification of its agricultural industries, Hawaii could become a potential production and launching site for both crops into the mainland USA.
