Assessment of post-harvest technology of khesari and lentil in selected areas of Bangladesh.

Postharvest activities have a great impact on the production of commodities. These activities at farm level are practised in different ways in different areas. The ways of harvesting, threshing, drying, storing, handling, transporting and milling can greatly influence the decision making of the farmers for the production of a particular crop. The losses of the products at different stages of pre- and postharvest operations should be assessed for the reduction of the losses at farm level in Bangladesh. The main objectives of this study are: to investigate postharvest activities for the pulse crops Lathyrus (khesari) and lentils and to examine the losses at different pre- and postharvest operation stages. The study was conducted in 1992 in Baliakandi and Dhamari upazilas in Rajbari and Dhaka districts, respectively. A total sample of 120 farmers (30 for each crop and district) was selected for the study. Traditional methods of postharvest operations increase the losses of the crops. Farmers should be advised on the right time for each activity and appropriate technology should be given through extension services.
