Effect of postharvest disinfection with polybor on citrus fruits - dehydration, rot development and boron residues.

Treatment with 1-5% polybor (sodium tetraborate, 20% a.i. borax) did not increase fruit peel dehydration or cause phytotoxicity in 5 Citrus varieties. Fruits treated with 5% polybor and rinsed or not rinsed in water afterwards developed a higher incidence of decay than those treated with 2% polybor. Similar results were obtained with wax-coated or unwaxed fruits. The best results, in terms of antifungal effect and water loss, were obtained with 1-2% polybor, wax-coating but no rinsing. The B ion residue in treated fruits did not exceed the approved level of 8 p.p.m.
