Improving the marketing of grain by farmers' cooperatives through the 'Bagsakan Center': the case of the CAVALCCO, Inc.

In an effort to unify the dispersed marketing operations of cooperatives in the Cagayan Valley region of the Philippines, the Cagayan Valley Confederation of Cooperatives, Inc. (CAVALCCO) was formed. It established a trading centre, locally known as 'Bagsakan (Trading) Centre' to assist cooperatives in rice marketing. The centre provides freight services for transporting rice to major market outlets, storage facilities, and a database on paddy and rice prices and other relevant materials. The financial analyses conducted on the effect of the Bagsakan Centre on the economic performance of the farmers, cooperatives and CAVALCCO, Inc., indicated that the centre's marketing strategy provided positive benefits to those involved.
