A survey of postharvest management of pawpaw (Carica papaya) in Paquera, Puntarenas.

The results of a survey in which 46 small-scale pawpaw growers participated are presented. Information is included on maturity indices used, the time of day at which fruits are harvested, harvesting equipment, in-farm transport methods, fruit loading onto trucks, and use of ethephon as a chemical ripener. The number of yellow bands on the fruit surface was used as a maturity index and most growers harvested the fruits between 05.00 h and 07.00 h. The most commonly used harvesting equipment was a long pole covered with rubber at the top end. Almost two thirds of the growers did not grade the fruits and 56.5% employed bulk transport, usually consisting of 3 or 4 layers of fruit in the truck. Chemical ripening was performed by 58.7% of growers. Losses of between 5 and 25% were reported, mainly due to fungal diseases, size, degree of ripeness and mechanical damage.
