Effect of ethephon and GA3 on the postharvest ethylene and CaM content of tomato.

The peak of ethylene emission by tomato fruits occurred 10-12 days after harvesting. Treatments with 75 p.p.m. GA3 reduced ethylene production, whereas 300 p.p.m. ethephon promoted it, but the starting time of ethylene emission was the same (10 days postharvest) regardless of treatment. The content of CaM [calmodulin] in fruits reached a maximum 12 days after harvest. Ethephon treatment increased the CaM content and two peaks were recorded; these occurred 5 and 12 days after harvest. GA3 increased the CaM content; its peak occurred 10 days after harvest, i.e. 2 days earlier than that of the control.
