Imazalil for postharvest control of anthracnose on mango fruits.

Imazalil in combination with water at 53 deg C was effective for postharvest control of anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata], on mangoes but did not significantly reduce the amount of stem end rot, caused by Diplodia natalensis [Botryodiplodia theobromae], on the fruits. The experiments were carried out in 1990 and 1991 using mangoes picked in Dade County, Florida, USA. An analysis of variance showed that the severity of anthracnose was affected by the concentration of imazalil and by the temperature of the water bath but that there was no interaction between the two factors. Imazalil at 500 mg/l in hot water significantly reduced anthracnose from 38 to 88% of that on control fruits. This reduction was typically greater than that due to the effect of heat alone. Further disease reductions at 1000 and 2000 mg/l typically were not significantly greater than those at 500 mg/l. Fruit injury was primarily dependent upon the temperature of the water bath, but imazalil concentration and its interaction with heat were also significant factors. Slight differences in fruit firmness and colour after ripening were not the result of heat or imazalil treatment.
