Problems and prospects.

African agriculture faces a number of hurdles: namely, the provision of the continent's population with food and nutrition; providing a challenging and worthwhile way of life; and understanding and rationalizing the vast wealth of traditional farming knowledge that exists in Africa. This paper sets out the need for and vision of an African integrated pest management (IPM) scheme which builds on this indigenous knowledge base. The core emphasis is on the importance of an African-orientated approach to agricultural science and the prominence of the relationship between researchers extension workers and farmers. This tripartite relationship should be conducted in a climate of understanding, communication and persistence, to foster the practice of formulating and implementing a common R&D agenda for IPM development, and to implement IPM approaches to crop and animal production as well as postharvest technology that recognize that losses caused by pests are an important factor in the overall agricultural performance of Africa.
