Economics of bamboo drip irrigation system.

In order to develop an alternative to the sophisticated commercial drip irrigation system, 2 low-cost drip systems, namely bamboo-polytube and polyethylene-polytube (PE-polytube), were constructed and their economic performances were evaluated and compared with the commercial drip system. The bamboo-polytube drip system was constructed with local Philippine bamboo using newly developed low-cost emitters. In the PE-polytube drip system thin PE pipes (20 mm diam.) and the same emitters were used. The commercial drip consisted of standard PE drip components with 12 mm diam. pipes. A field experiment was conducted at the vineyard of the Central Luzon State University, Philippines, during January-April 1990. The study showed that fixed plus operational costs in US$ha-1yr-1 were 659, 1,288 and 1,349 for PE-polytube, commercial and bamboo-polytube systems resp. The installation cost of the commercial drip system was very expensive (US$3,315) but the maintenance cost was less when compared with the other 2 systems. The low level techniques used in fabrication, installation, operation and maintenance of the bamboo and PE polytube drip systems encouraged their adoption by farmers due to simplicity of construction. The high cracking sensitivity of bamboo pipes in sunshine discourages its use unless it is treated chemically. Based on the results obtained from the study, the PE-polytube drip system was identified as the best alternative to the commercial drip system. It is also both economically and technically viable.
