Effect of 10-oxo-trans-8-decenoic acid on growth of Agaricus bisporus.

10-Oxo-trans-8-decenoic acid (ODA, isolated from mushrooms) was applied to the mycelium of A. bisporus, growing on potato dextrose yeast (PDY) agar plates and in liquid culture (PDY broth), and was found to stimulate mycelial growth and stipe elongation. Higher mushroom yields at the first flush, resulting from supplementation of the casing layer with ODA (1.2 or 5.3 mg/kg) in the form of mushroom powder, suggested that ODA may be involved in the initiation of fruiting. ODA also stimulated the elongation of the upper region of isolated mushroom stipes, and may therefore be involved in postharvest stipe elongation. ODA is considered to be a mushroom growth regulator.
