Application of non-destructive mechanical impact to evaluate the maturity of "Hass" avocados during ripening at +20 deg C and during storage.

The response of Hass avocados to low energy mechanical impacts during postharvest ripening was analysed. An impactor 49.29 g in weight, falling from a height of 4 cm was used, connected to a personal computer. Special software was used to retrieve and analyse the deceleration data. Firmness of the avocado pulp was measured by the double-plate indentor method. One group of fruits was stored at 6 deg C for 60 d and a second group at 20 deg C for 11 d. The fruits were tested for impact response and firmness throughout the storage period. In avocados, it was shown that the impact response can be used as a predictor of firmness, with the same accuracy as destructive firmness measurements.
