1991 Temperature survey of export avocados.

Extensive temperature surveys and investigations into handling and transport procedures conducted over 4 consecutive seasons confirmed the following: delivery air temperature control must be accurate with a maximum deviation of around 0.5 deg C from the optimum; the optimum carrying temperature varies according to the physiological maturity of the fruits; a system whereby the carrying temperature is lowered as the season progresses (maturation) and during the voyage (ripening) reduces the incidence of chilling injury and soft fruits; and the postharvest age of the fruits should not exceed 28 days between picking and marketing. These rules were followed in the 1991 season to formulate a successful temperature management system during sea shipment, through the cooperation of the fruit industry and export personnel. The results of temperature studies are discussed for each stage of transport, viz. refrigerated motor transport from the packhouse to Cape Town, during the voyage, and transport after discharge to the market.
