Planning for sustainable agricultural development based on natural resources and bioenergy systems: a case study.

In order to develop energy and plant nutrient supply systems and their management practices suited to different sections of the rural community in an identified village, an Operational Research Project on Integrated Energy and Nutrient Supply Systems was initiated in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, in 1984. An Energy Census and Resource Assessment Survey was carried out in 1981 to assess the energy use pattern of different categories of farmers for agricultural production, postharvest operations, cattle raising and domestic activities. Using such data, this paper illustrates the total energy and material flow in the Islamnagar village ecosystem. The survey has become the basis for planning and implementation of village development based on alternative and renewable energy sources, a return in fact to the Gandhian concept of 50 years ago. The paper presents the planning, implementation and, to some extent, monitoring of the self-sufficiency plan with regard to fuelwood, fodder, pulses and oilseeds, based on renewable energy sources.
