Commodity losses and their relationship to energy in agricultural systems.

Commodity losses after harvest diminish proportionately the productivity of the energy inputs for agricultural systems. World food production, losses in the food distribution system, process losses for apples and potatoes, and the energy productivity of potatoes and food grains are discussed. Data are tabulated on postharvest losses of non-grain staples, vegetables and fruits by commodity and by country/region; on food losses during distribution; on losses during apple and potato processing; and on potato production and yield in various geographical areas.
