Post-harvest damage to maize in small farmers' stores.

The findings are reported of investigations on the major causes of postharvest grain loss in small scale farm storage in Zimbabwe. Grain damage by insect pests in insecticide-treated and untreated maize stored in traditional and specially designed granaries was monitored over 2 storage seasons. In one study with malathion-treated and untreated grain, samples stored over a 10-month period exhibited damages of 81.9 and 92.6%, resp. Malathion was not significantly effective in controlling insect pests. In the second study, it was shown that pirimiphos-methyl treatment significantly reduced damage by insects. Aflatoxin was not detected in any of these grain samples in spite of the fact that Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium species were detected in 3 and 9% of the samples evaluated, resp.
