Strategies for the control of postharvest diseases of vegetables.

During the growing season, a large and varied population of microorganisms responsible for postharvest wastage collects on the surfaces of vegetables. Some of these produce latent infections, but the majority are incapable of infecting the produce until after harvest when the maturation process accelerates. The efforts of the grower to produce high-yielding, high-quality crops may therefore be jeopardized by deterioration in storage before marketing. Optimal storage conditions have been identified for most commodities and these contribute greatly to minimizing postharvest losses; nevertheless, losses continue to occur and, in some situations, can be quite substantial. Various control strategies designed to prevent such losses are described.
