Biological control of Botrytis rot of apple.

Two yeasts isolated from the surface of apples harvested in unsprayed orchards, identified as Trichosporon sp. and Candida sp., effectively controlled postharvest rot of apple caused by Botrytis cinerea. Wounded fruits (cv. Golden Delicious) treated with 106 cells/ml of the yeasts and inoculated with the pathogen showed a lower disease incidence than untreated control fruit, both when the fruit were stored at 2-4 deg and 22 deg C. The yeasts were effective when disease incidence was moderate.
