Pre- and postharvest evaluation of six snow pea cultivars.

The pre- and postharvest performance of 6 snow pea (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon) cultivars was evaluated. Plant density was 10 plants/m2. Pod production started 93 days after sowing for De Grace and Norly, 104 days after sowing for Early Forty and Hyogo and 113 days after sowing for Corne de Bellier and Yakumo. The harvesting period ranged from 38 days in Yakumo to 52 days in Corne de Bellier. Total pod yields were 4.9, 7.4, 8.1, 11.5, 11.6 and 12.0 ton/ha for De Grace, Yakumo, Norly, Corne de Bellier, Early Forty and Hyogo, respectively. Almost 70% of the yield was concentrated in a period of 16-24 days and marketable yield was about 80% of total yield in all cultivars, except Yakumo and De Grace, in which it was approx. 70 and 60%, respectively. All cultivars showed similar postharvest behaviour, with an estimated storage life of up to 15 days at 0 deg C and 75% RH, limited mainly by weight loss (dehydration) of the pods.
