Postharvest quality of potted Impatiens walleriana Hook. f. ex D. Oliver as influenced by silver thiosulphate application and light conditions.

Potted plants I. walleriana cv. Super Elfin Scarlet were acclimatized under a range of shading conditions for 30 days before harvest and then subjected to a postharvest florist shop environment of 0 deg C with artificial lighting. Flower bud abscission was suppressed by a 60-80% reduction in light during the acclimatization period. An artificial light intensity of 5.5 W/m2 after harvest reduced bud abscission compared with 0.55 W/m2. A foliar spray of 0.001 mM silver thiosulphate (STS) applied at harvest effectively reduced flower bud abscission induced by low light intensity during the postharvest period but it had no effect on preventing weak shoot growth. A light intensity of 3.5 W/m2 in combination with STS extended the shelf-life of the plants to 19 days, compared with 6 days in STS-treated plants kept in the dark during the postharvest period.
