Botrytis stem-end rot and other storage diseases of kiwifruit - a review.

Storage diseases of kiwifruit are briefly reviewed with emphasis on Botrytis rots. It is suggested that stem-end rot, caused by B. cinerea is the most important postharvest disease of kiwifruit in cool storage. The presence of stem-end rot predisposes the fruit to other ripe rots (Botryosphaeria, Fusicoccum, Diaporthe, Fusarium, Phoma, Glomerella, Colletotrichum and Cryptosporiopsis) when the fruit is taken from cold storage. Restrictions in the postharvest application of fungicides to control Botrytis and the effect of temp. on fruit quality in storage are discussed. It is concluded that the significance of ripe rot fungi will only become clear when Botrytis stem-end rot can be successfully prevented. This paper was presented at the Second International Symposium on Kiwifruit, held in Palmerston North, New Zealand, 18-21 Feb. 1991.
