Postharvest quality and losses of 'Rongrein' rambutan fruits in wholesale markets.

The Bangkok wholesale markets were surveyed for fruits sold during the early and mid-seasons of 1990 and 1991. More of the fruits were yellow-green (rather than red-brown), smaller, and with lower TSS and more total acidity during the early season than in the mid-season. The percentage and causes of postharvest losses varied between the 2 seasons. Losses due to physical damage (7.31-41.58%) were the highest, followed by mealybug [unspecified] damage (3.30-11.4%) and were lowest for fungal diseases (0.15-2.44%). Skin blemish (black scar) and browning spinterns, both resulting from faulty handling, were major contributors to fruit losses in 1990 and 1991, respectively.
