Role of research for horticultural development in Ethiopia.

Horticultural crops play an economically important role as garden crops in Ethiopia by providing food and improving cereal based diets, particularly in densely populated regions. Commercial horticultural production is, in general, at an infant stage, although the progress made in the past few years is quite encouraging. Problems occur in production, storage, processing and marketing. Research has been conducted for the last 30 years on different horticultural crops at various experiment stations. The results have enabled researchers to develop many varieties of vegetable and fruit that are adaptable to different ecological zones both for local consumption and export. In terms of the country's potential as a horticultural crop producer, the role played by the crops is negligible. Moreover, both quality and quantity are low when compared with world standards. A sound improvement of horticultural crop production could be attained by promoting improved and adapted cultivars; and also by developing cultural practices, appropriate machinery, effective and cheap pest control measures, irrigation and storage facilities, and efficient transport, processing and marketing systems. Development of the horticultural crop industry thus depends heavily on the joint efforts of researchers, producers and policy makers.
