Poverty and gender issues.

The increasing duration of the female work-day, the widening gap between male and female incomes and the rising responsibilities of women within the household are all evidence of the view that rural women have often been the victims of development processes and outcomes. This report reviews the status of women in Asia and the South Pacific with a special focus on gender issues in agriculture. Separate sections of the report deal with power inputs and labour, access to other technologies, pest control, water and other natural resources. Limited access to resources is visible in the higher mortality rates of women who lack medical care, food and social services. In addition their contribution is not recognized within the household even though they spend long hours working. The subordination of women is also demonstrated in their position with respect to environmental degradation. Often they are uneducated and do not have the opportunity to acquire farm management training. The role of female labour is analysed in fisheries, food processing and preparation, and postharvest operations. In order to enhance their status the Food and Agriculture Organization's Plan of Action centres around four spheres of life: civil status, economic, social and decision-making. It is believed that women alone can achieve their higher status and they are urged to participate in the development process.
