Use of a temperature integrator to control ice-making using cold outside air.

An ice-making system using cold winter air was developed to produce cooling capacity for fruit and vegetable postharvest handling. A control system for an ice making operation was developed based on a temp. integrator. This system was compared to a more conventional three-temp. setting control system during an ice making experiment held in Ottawa. The integrator/controller system permitted a 31% increase in use of available natural cooling capacity when compared to the three-temp.-control system. Using av. weather data for 7 Canadian locations, it was shown that the integrator/controller system permitted better utilization of cold outside air in all locations. This analysis also showed that the winter cold could be stored everywhere in Canada except for southern, and ocean bordered regions.
