'Algonquin' red raspberry.

Algonquin is derived from the cross Haida x Canby and was released in 1984 as the germplasm designated BC72-1-7. It is homozygous for the gene Ag1 which confers resistance to Amphorophora agathonica, the insect vector of the raspberry mosaic virus complex. It also possesses some resistance to root rot caused by Phytophthora erythroseptica and to postharvest rot caused by Rhizopus spp. Since 1984 Algonquin has been tested at several sites in eastern Canada, in the Pacific Northwest, Denmark and New Zealand. High yields from the Canadian trials led to the naming of the selection. At Simcoe, Ontario, in 1988 and 1989 total yield of Algonquin was 21 t/ha, more than that of Boyne (18 t/ha), Nova (18 t/ha) or Royalty (15.8 t/ha). Fruit size was 2 g, smaller than all cultivars except Boyne. Good bud break was shown in trials in New Zealand which is indicative of low chilling requirement. Fruits of Algonquin have good processing qualities. The cultivar is recommended for regions where low winter tempera tures limit the growth of some cultivars.
