CA storage of kiwifruit: influence on rots and storability.

In a 3-year trial on kiwifruit grown in Italy, fruit was treated with iprodione, vinclozolin or CaCl2 or left at ambient temp. for 48-120 h after harvesting. All fruit were then stored in regular storage (RS) or in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage for about 5 months at -0.5 to -1 deg C, with ethylene values less than or equal to 0.03 p.p.m. at 92-95% RH and O2 between 2 and 2.5% and CO2 between 4.5 and 5% for CA. CA storage delayed flesh softening, but increased the incidence of Botrytis stem-end rot (B. cinerea). Postharvest fungicide and CaCl2 treatments or cooling delay reduced the incidence of B. cinerea.
