Exporting fumigated fresh nectarines by air and simulated surface shipment to Japan.

California-grown nectarines not treated with postharvest fungicides were commercially fumigated with methyl bromide (48 g/m3 at 21 deg C or higher to eliminate Cydia pomonella), and were shipped to Japan and evaluated for condition after arrival and storage. During air-freight, fruit temperatures ranged from 5 deg to 9 deg . Fruits were exposed for 6-12 h to ambient temperatures of 25 deg - 30 deg while waiting for customs clearance and plant quarantine inspection at Tokyo airport. Slight methyl bromide injury was observed on shipments of cv. Red Diamond but no phytotoxicity was observed on cv. Summergrand fruits. After simulated surface shipments where fruits were held at 0 deg for 2 weeks and one additional week at either 10 deg or 20 deg , fruit firmness decreased during the week at 10 deg or 20 deg by 37 and 85%, respectively.
