The molecular basis of ethylene biosynthesis, mode of action, and effects in higher plants.

This review summarises recent progress in the understanding of molecular aspects of ethylene physiology and biochemistry and its important role in several stages of plant development. Relevant data are detailed under the following headings: (1) molecular aspects of ethylene biosynthesis; (2) ethylene mode of action: on the way to unravel how a plant perceives a two-carbon atom molecule; and (3) molecular aspects of ethylene inducibility. Current and future analyses are expected to reveal the fine tuning system necessary to control the pleiotropic effects of this hormone. Consequently, a great economic impact in agricultural biotechnology is foreseen, since controlled endogenous ethylene production could reduce postharvest losses due to bruising or overripening.
