Ultrastructure of seed coat and seed viability in Shorea robusta Gaertn. f.

Seeds were harvested on various dates and stored in air-tight containers at room temperature. Only those harvested 45 days after anthesis proved viable and they were found to lose their viability after 10 days postharvest. The moisture content of non-viable seeds was much lower than that of viable seeds (26 and 46%, respectively). The basal, central and apical regions of the testa also showed differences in the surface hairs (as revealed under SEM) between the viable and non-viable seeds, with non-viable seeds having a reduced number of hairs in the central region. This loss of hairs in non-viable seeds results in a fall in moisture content and is one of the factors connected with the rapid loss in viability.
