Effect of pre- and post-harvest treatments on shelf life and quality of carrot under different storage conditions.

Carrots (cv. Nantes) were sprayed with maleic hydrazide (MH) at 1000, 1500, 2000 or 2500 p.p.m. at 15 days before harvesting. Unsprayed plants acted as a control. After harvest, carrots were stored in a cool chamber. Lowest physiological weight loss (10.25%), % sprouting (30%) and respiration rate (0.49 mg CO2 kg-1 h-1) at the end of storage were obtained with 1500 p.p.m. MH. The following year roots of plants treated with 1500 p.p.m. MH and control plants were dipped in 100 p.p.m. Cl (bleaching powder), 500 p.p.m. Bavistin [carbendazim] or a combination of the two before storage at room temperature (17-33.5 deg C and 58.5-73.0% RH), in a cool chamber (19-21 deg and 90-95% RH) or in a cool store (0-1.1 deg and 65-70% RG). The shelf-life of carrots was extended from 5 days at room temperature to 33 days in a cool chamber on application of 100 p.p.m. Cl as a pre-storage treatment, with or without pre-harvest application of 1500 p.p.m. MH. The quality of carrots after storage was highest with pre-harvest application of 1500 p.p.m. MH, postharvest application of 100 p.p.m. Cl and storage in a cool chamber.
