Gibberellins and abscisic acid in reproductive organs of Rosa hybrida.

The androecium and gynoecium were removed from cut flowers of R. hybrida at various stages and ABA and GAs were extracted, purified and determined. At harvest, ABA was mainly localized in the gynoecium. During vase life, the ABA level remained fairly steady in the gynoecium, but increased in the androecium, particularly after anthesis, reaching 3000 ng/g FW after 15 days. It is suggested that the androecium could be a source of ABA, particularly during senescence. An unknown immunoreactive compound followed a similar pattern to ABA in both the gynoecium and the androecium. At harvest, the androecium contained more GAs than the gynoecium. The GAs present in the androecium were essentially less polar than those in the gynoecium. It is suggested that GAs are synthesized in the androecium and then converted to more polar GAs or conjugated GAs which accumulate in the gynoecium.
