Effect of storage temperature on the postharvest behaviour of Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) fruits.

Fruits were separated by pedicel colour index into 2 maturity stages and stored at 0 and 7 deg C for 15 and 33 days before keeping for 7 days at 18 deg . Fruits were analysed after storage and after 7 days at 18 deg for ground colour, pulp firmness, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, respiration rate and fungal infection. None of the storage treatments had any effect on ground colour or pulp firmness. Titratable acidity generally decreased during storage and fungal infection(Alternaria, Botrytis, Cladosporium and Penicillium spp.) increased as storage duration and temperature increased. Storage decay was greatest in fruits harvested at the later maturity stage. Optimum results were obtained when fruits were harvested at M-1 (earlier) maturity stage (green pedicel colour) and stored at 0 deg .
