Maintaining cotton quality.

Nine bales of Midsouth cotton were subjected to 3 harvesting treatments, 3 levels of lint cleaning, 3 levels of mill opening line cleaning, and 2 levels of mill carding. Fibre properties after ginning were best for the normal-harvested cotton without lint cleaning, but producer returns were best for normal-harvested cotton cleaned by 2 lint cleaners. After the cotton was cleaned at the mill, the best fibre properties shifted from the normal-harvested cotton to the early harvested cotton. Fibre properties after mill cleaning were best for early harvested cotton ginned with one lint cleaner, cleaned at the mill opening line with a hopper, Superior Cleaner, Superior Cleaner and picker, and carded twice.
