Skin color in 'Newtown' apples treated with calcium nitrate, urea, diphenylamine, and a film coating.

Preharvest foliar application of 10 g urea/litre or 7.5 g Ca(NO3)2/litre weekly for 5 consecutive weeks from late Aug. increased green colour in Newtown apples at harvest and during storage for up to 180 d, compared with fruits from control trees. A postharvest dip in Nutri-Save, a polymeric coating, improved the retention of a green colour, whereas dipping in diphenylamine had no effect. Fruits from Ca(NO3)2 treatments displayed lesions that were larger and more numerous than typical bitter pit symptoms in control fruits.
