Botryodiplodia fruit rot of pear fruits, some physiological and pathological studies.

In 1988, the pathogenicity of several B. theobromae isolates from rotten pears in Egypt was confirmed. Physiological studies on 2 isolates showed that 15, 30 and 35 deg C were the opt. temp. for growth. In inoculated pears the disease was severe at 25-30 deg , moderate at 20 and 35 deg and completely inhibited at 10 deg . The fungus grew in vitro at pH 3-9 when NH4Cl was the N source but failed to grow at pH 3-5 with sodium nitrate. Starch, pectin, sodium polypectate, cellobiose, glucose, galactose and galacturonic acid improved growth. Total and reducing sugar concn and polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities were decreased in diseased tissues.
