Effects of inhibitors of ethylene synthesis and action on ethylene biosynthesis and flower longevity of carnations.

Flowers of cv. White Sim were cut when open, pulsed with 10 mM aminooxyacetic acid (AOA) for 2 h or 4 mM silver thiosulphate (STS) for 30 min, and then kept in distilled water or 0.5 mM ACC at 21 deg C under continuous light. Pretreatment with AOA doubled the vase life, producing slow senescence and wilting. Climacteric peaks of ethylene evolution appeared synchronously at day 6, when the petals began to wilt, in all parts of unpretreated flowers. Ethylene evolution and ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) activity were higher in the bases than in the upper parts of the petals. AOA significantly suppressed the ethylene evolution of various floral parts; it did not affect ACC content but completely inhibited the EFE activity, and therefore the ethylene evolution, of the petals. Flowers kept in ACC solution after pulsing with AOA or STS showed low EFE activity and ethylene evolution at 10% of the level seen in control flowers. Injection of flower buds with STS or AOA in the greenhouse had the same inhibitory effect on ethylene levels and EFE activity as postharvest treatment.
