Extension of traditional postharvest fish processing techniques.

Villagers around the Saguling Reservoir, West Java, practise various traditional freshwater fish processing techniques. It is felt, however, that extension services aimed at enhancing the income-earning potential of fish farmers would contribute to the development of the region significantly. This article describes an extension programme implemented to improve the preparation and preservation of freshwater fish. Results from a sample of 438 people between 1987 and 1988 show that most trainees had insufficient amounts of start-up capital to begin their own post-harvest fish processing operations. Hence, there is a need for complementary credit facilities in the Saguling area. Also farmers faced much competition from producers of processed ocean fish which was available in large quantities in the market.
