Packaging and storage of horticultural crops in India.

Postharvest loss reduction is an indirect means of increasing the availability of horticultural crops. Packaging and storage play a vital role in postharvest handling of these perishable commodities. Packaging not only provides convenient units for marketing and distribution but also protects delicate fruits, vegetables and flowers from undue damage during handling. Storage of these physiologically active products is essential for sensible marketing, as it requires a balance between harvesting and sales, and/or for long term storage in order to extend the period of availability beyond the end of the harvest season. In India, the traditional packaging using locally available materials is used and is often not ideal; storage facilities are also far from adequate. The different types of packaging materials used in horticulture, their development, storage systems and low cost storage technology are discussed and the role of plastics in packaging and storage of horticultural crops is emphasized.
