Desiccation tolerance of deciduous plants during postharvest handling.

Crataegus phaenopyrum is considered by nurserymen to be sensitive and Acer platanoides to be tolerant to postharvest handling. Monitoring of the desiccation tolerance, cold hardiness and water potential at various growth stages in field-grown plants of the 2 species indicated that there were no differences between them in the rate of water loss by roots, shoots or whole plants. However, C. phaenopyrum was more sensitive to desiccation stress than A. platanoides at all growth stages. Roots lost water at a faster rate than stems in both species. A. platanoides was hardier and acquired cold hardiness earlier in the autumn than C. phaenopyrum.
