Chemical control of simultaneous cereal cyst nematode and termite infestations in wheat in Rajasthan, India.

This study investigated the effects of termiticides and nematicides and their combinations on Heterodera avenae and Odontotermes obesus and Microtermes obesi, wheat yields and economics of the treatments. Field trials with the bread wheat cv. Kalyansona were conducted at sites in Jaipur District where the pests were a problem to wheat production. Two nematicides, aldicarb and carbofuran; two forms of a termiticide, aldrin 5% dust and aldrin E.C.; and their combinations were tested. Aldicarb and carbofuran, alone or in combination with the termiticide, reduced postharvest cereal cyst nematode population by about 50%. All treatments significantly reduced the percentage of cumulative termite-damaged shoots, though the nematicides alone were less effective. Significantly higher grain and straw yields were obtained with combinations of the nematicides and termiticides. Though all treatments were economical, the highest marginal profits were obtained with the combination of aldicarb and aldrin e.c.
