The effect of different treatments on occurrence of diseases and weeds in perennial ryegrass, meadow fescue and yellow oat grass.

The effects of burning plant residues immediately after harvest and in the spring and low cutting on occurrence of foliar diseases (Puccinia spp., powdery mildew and spotting caused by Drechslera spp.), silver top (Leptopterna dolobrata), dead plant residues and decotyledonous weeds on ryegrass (Lolium perenne), meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and yellow oat grass (Trisetum flavescens) grown for seed were studied in the Czech Republic during 1986-89. The postharvest burning of stubble and straw residues reduced leaf infections in the 3 host species. Low cutting at the end of the vegetative period and burning reduced the occurrence of silver top. The incidence of decotyledonous weeds was stimulated by low cutting.
