New storage disease of guava fruit caused by Cylindrocladium scoparium.

C. scoparium has been frequently identified as a cause of postharvest guava damage in Malaysia since it was first detected on stored fruit in 1986. The initial symptoms are brown, dry, slightly sunken spots. During storage at 28 plus or minus 2 deg C, the symptoms appear after 2 d on wounded and after 3 d on non-wounded fruits. More often, numerous small spots are present around the original infection site. Whitish mycelium followed by yellowish-orange masses of phialospores of the pathogen are commonly seen on infected fruit and can spread to adjacent healthy fruit through physical contact. This is the first report of this disease on guava.
