Different methods of applying SO2 postharvest for preserving table grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Sultanina (Thompson Seedless).

Several treatments involving fumigation with SO2, packing in polyethylene bags or storing without bags, and the use of SO2 generators (paper impregnated with Na2S2O5) were evaluated. The treated berries were stored at 0 deg C and 85% RH for 21 or 35 days, followed by 3 days at ambient temperature. The lowest incidence of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium infection was observed on berries fumigated before packing in polyethylene bags and stored in boxes containing SO2 generators. Some berry discoloration attributable to SO2 was noted and berry splitting was associated with storage in polyethylene bags.
