Effect of treatment after picking on the incidence of post-harvest fruit diseases of avocado.

Severity of stem-end rot, anthracnose [Glomerella cingulata] and the Dothiorella/Colletotrichum complex (DCC) fruit rot of avocado was correlated with length of ripening time of the fruit. Stem-end rot was more severe in fruits harvested while wet or rinsed with tap water. Removal of the fruit pedicel or sealing the cut pedicel with wax containing benomyl and thiabendazole (TBZ) reduced stem-end rot. Anthracnose was more severe in fruits from which the pedicels had been removed than in control fruits, whereas DCC fruit rot was increased by harvesting fruits while wet and rinsing with tap water. Waxing resulted in a higher incidence of anthracnose and DCC fruit rot. Adding benomyl and TBZ to the wax reduced the severity of anthracnose in the waxed fruits. Dipping fruits in prochloraz before waxing, or mist-spraying with prochloraz + wax, reduced anthracnose when compared with waxing alone. Removal of the pedicel, as well as wrapping and waxing, increased the ripening time of the fruits.
