Towards an integrated fruit culture in Italy.

Market forces and environmental considerations are changing fruit farming methods in Italy. There is a move to integrated fruit culture which varies from region to region. In Trentino and South Tyrol, extension services monitor pest and disease control. In 1986, the Emilia Romagna region launched an IPM project with 170 extension agents involving both fruit and wine groups covering over 15 000 ha. There will be less emphasis on yields and more on energy conservation, realising the genetic potential of species and utilizing their resistance to stress e.g. pests, diseases and water shortage. Consumer appeal will also be assessed. Italy has an extensive network of research facilities and should be in a good position to play a leading role in these new developments. Farming methods should not pollute water supplies and should be involved in recycling urban waste. More economic irrigation methods to conserve water are needed. Methods of soil cultivation leading to soil compaction are being reassessed, as is the excessive use of herbicides to control weeds. Nitrogen fertilizer applications of 50-70 units/ha have proved to be sufficient for high density fruit tree production. The role of harvesting schedules and postharvest technology and potential non-food uses of horticultural biomass are also considered in relation to integrated fruit culture. Changes needed within Italy's research institutions in order to further implement integrated production systems are briefly examined.
