Pneumatic conveying of milled rice.

Three medium grain varieties ('Mars', 'Nato', and 'Saturn') of milled rice were evaluated for damage in a pressure-type pneumatic conveying system. Operating parameters included four air-to-solid ratios and four air velocities. Mechanical damage to the kernels was assessed in terms of broken and fissured kernels. The percentage of damaged kernels increased with an increase in the air-to-solid ratio. Conveying air velocity did not significantly affect the percent increase in damaged kernels. Among the three rice varieties tested, Nato was the least susceptible to damage while Mars was the most susceptible.
