Post-harvest behaviour of carnation varieties as influenced by chemicals

The present investigation was undertaken with 16 carnation genotypes, planted in completely randomized block design under low cost polyhouse with the objective of studying the post harvest behaviour of different carnation varieties as influenced by vase solutions (chemicals) and the correlation behaviour among different characters. These genotypes were selected for post harvest analysis by using completely randomized block design with treatments as factorial combination of 16 types of cultivars and 3 levels of different holding solutions. The carnation varieties, Tabour, Dark Randevous, Master, Liberty and Ferada had minimum days taken to bud opening, maximum flower diameter, vase life and minimum flower weight loss when held in STS solution, whereas maximum uptake of solution was found when they were held in AgNO3 solution. Correlation studies revealed that flower duration was positively and highly significantly correlated with flower diameter and water uptake whereas negatively and significantly correlated with flower weight loss. Path coefficient analysis showed that flower diameter and water uptake had positive direct effect on flower duration.
