Pepper seed quality after different periods of postharvest ripening depending on the position on the mother plant

The main aims of the present study were to establish the possibilities to improve the quality of pepper seeds through application of different duration of postharvest ripening, depending on seed position on the mother plant and also to determine the acceptable period of fruit storage after harvest before seed extraction. The experiments were carried out with typical Bulgarian cultivars ‘Kurtovska kapia 1619’ and ‘Bulgarski rotund’. The dry matter of fruits and seeds, energy of germination, germinability, fresh matter of sprout of one seed, length of the embryo root and hypocotyl, rate and simultaneity of germination were investigated. The absolute dry matter, total sugar, raw protein and oil content in seeds were also determined. The highest germinabilty was reported after the application of 9- and 6-day postharvest treatment for the first and the second layer in ‘Kurtovska kapia 1619’, respectively, while for ‘Bulgharski rotund’ – for a 9-day period for both layers. The seeds from the second layer were influenced stronger by that method.
